I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our team a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important things close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
