I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time day or night. We’ll be there as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any significant things, mop up any water, and place a container to catch any drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
